Who we are
Pushtimarg Satsang is a free devotional app for iOS and Android (package name com.krishna.kalpesh.pushtimargsatsang) and a companion website at pushtimargsatsang.com. Together they offer a library of Pushtimarg Vaishnav kirtans and paaths in Gujarati and English, with audio playback, playlists, favourites, a festival (utsav) calendar, and gentle on-device reminders for Ekadashi and utsav days.
The app and website are built and maintained by a single developer as a service to the Vaishnav community. For the purposes of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the EU General Data Protection Regulation (EU GDPR), the data controller is Pushtimarg Satsang. This policy explains, in plain language, what little data the service touches, why, and what your rights are.
The short version: the reader app has no accounts or advertising. The app uses a random installation identifier for favourites and requests. If you choose to share a playlist, its title and kirtan numbers are stored on our server so that others can open it. The website uses our self-hosted Umami service to measure visits and improve the library, as explained below. We do not sell personal information or use analytics for advertising.
What we do not collect
It is easier to start with what is absent, because most of the usual list does not apply here:
- No reader accounts, sign-up, login or passwords are required in the app or public website. The private analytics dashboard has an administrator login.
- No advertising, in-app purchases, or subscriptions.
- No analytics or crash-reporting software in the mobile app, and no Firebase. Website analytics is described below.
- No use of your location, contacts, microphone or advertising identifier.
- No advertising trackers, social media widgets, or embedded advertising technology.
- No selling or sharing of data for marketing, ever.
- We do not ask readers to provide information about health, religious beliefs or other sensitive personal matters. Reading devotional content can itself suggest an interest in a faith. We therefore do not link website analytics to names, email addresses, app installation identifiers or advertising profiles.
Information the app handles
A random device identifier. When the app is first opened, it generates a random identifier (a UUID) and registers it with our server. This identifier is not your name, not your email, and not linked to any account, because no accounts exist; it exists so that your favourites and anything you submit can be associated with your copy of the app. It is included with the app's requests to our server: when the app fetches the kirtan library (so your favourites can be shown), when you mark or unmark a favourite, and when you send a request or check on one in My requests (see "Voluntary submissions" below). It identifies an installation of the app, not a person.
Browsing content. When you read kirtans, lyrics, or the festival calendar, the app fetches that content from our own content server. Apart from the random identifier and your chosen language, nothing about you is sent in order to view content. Like any web server, ours and our host's keep standard server logs (the address a request came from, the time and the page asked for) to run and protect the service.
Favourites. The kirtans you mark as favourites are saved on your device and also synced to our server against your random identifier, so they are not lost if you reinstall the app. Our server therefore holds a list of favourite kirtans for each identifier; it says nothing about who you are.
Your other preferences. Your playlists (until you choose to share one, see below), chosen language, theme and accent colour, reminder settings and downloads are stored on your device only, using the standard Android or iOS local storage. If you delete the app, they are deleted with it.
Shared playlists. A playlist stays on your phone unless you choose to share it. When you do, the app sends its title and the list of kirtan numbers in it to our server, which gives back a six-letter code and a link. Anyone who has the link or code can open that playlist. It does not contain your name or your device identifier. We keep only a scrambled (hashed) form of the secret that lets you update or stop sharing it, not the secret itself. The shared playlist stays on our server until you choose Stop sharing, which deletes it. The address your phone connects from (its IP address) is kept with it for at most 24 hours, only to limit abuse, and is then removed.
Cover photos and backup files. If you choose a photo from your library as a playlist cover, the app reads that one photo and keeps a copy inside the app on your phone. It is never uploaded, and it is not part of a shared playlist. You can export a backup file of your playlists, favourites and settings. It is created on your device and goes only where you save or send it. It does not contain the secret that lets you edit or stop sharing a playlist.
Calendar subscriptions. The utsav and Ekadashi calendar feeds are ordinary public calendar files on our website. If you add one to your phone's calendar, your calendar app (Apple Calendar or Google Calendar) fetches the file. The Pushtimarg Satsang app itself sends nothing about you when it opens your calendar app, and the files contain no personal data.
Reminders. Reminders for Ekadashi fasting days and utsavs are scheduled entirely on your device using the operating system's own notification system. Nothing is sent to any server to make reminders work.
Voluntary submissions
The app offers four optional ways to send us something. All four are entirely your choice. Each one becomes a request that you can follow in My requests, and only the developer can see and answer them. Nothing is published without being reviewed personally by the developer:
- Add a Kirtan: you may submit a kirtan's text for possible inclusion in the library.
- Kirtan correction: you may report an error in existing content.
- Feedback: you may send us a message. The feedback form includes an optional email field, which you may fill in only if you would like a personal reply. If you leave it blank, no email address is collected.
- Requesting a kirtan: if you look for a kirtan and it is not in the library, you may ask for it to be added. What is sent is the name you type, anything else you choose to add to help identify it, the words you searched for, the language you are reading in, the app version, the type of phone system (iOS or Android), and your app install identifier. Nothing else about you. A request is never published: it is read personally and used to decide what to add next.
When you use any of these, our server stores what you typed, together with your device's random identifier, your reading language, the app version and the type of phone system. Each one is kept with a status (for example Open, Added, Already in the app, Done or Declined) and, where we write one, a reply. The My requests screen in the app asks our server for the requests filed under your random identifier, never by name or account, and shows you their status and any reply. A copy is kept on your phone so the list also shows offline. For rate limits (to stop abuse), your IP address is kept with a request for at most 24 hours and is then removed.
How we are told. When you send something, the developer is told by email. Kirtan requests are emailed to the app's own inbox by the website's server. Corrections, new kirtans and feedback are also passed through our email automation, a service we run ourselves (a self-hosted n8n instance), which delivers them to the developer's personal email inbox, provided by Google. That alert also carries your app version, your phone's operating system and its version. If you give an email address in Feedback, it travels only by this alert email and is not saved with your request on our server. We do not use any of this for marketing.
Information the website handles
The public website has no reader accounts or sign-up. Its search form searches the catalogue; search terms are excluded from analytics.
Cookies. The website sets two first-party cookies, both purely functional:
site_languageremembers whether you last read the site in English or Gujarati.site_viewremembers whether you last viewed the festival calendar as a list or a grid.
Neither cookie identifies you as a person, and there are no tracking or advertising cookies of any kind.
Browser local storage. The website stores your dark or light mode preference, whether you dismissed the "get the app" banner (so it does not reappear for 30 days), and your analytics opt-out choice in your own browser. These preferences are not sent as analytics data. Clearing site data removes them, including an analytics opt-out.
Website analytics. We run a separate, self-hosted Umami service at analytics.pushtimargsatsang.com on our Hostinger server. It records page visits, the reading language, referring website, browser and device category, approximate location, page performance, audio starts and app-store link clicks. This helps us understand which lyrics are useful and whether the website works well. The analytics dashboard requires a private login.
The tracker does not set analytics cookies. The server receives an IP address as part of the network request and uses it to derive approximate location and temporary session identifiers; Umami does not save the raw IP address in its analytics database. We do not send names, email addresses, app identifiers, search terms, arbitrary URL parameters or URL fragments. We do not enable session recordings, heatmaps or identification of individual readers.
Analytics data stays in our self-hosted database; it is not sent to Umami Cloud. Our hosting providers process network requests and infrastructure data to operate the servers. Analytics currently has no automatic expiry; stored records can be removed by the administrator. Daily analytics backups are retained for 14 days.
Your choice. We respect browser Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control signals. You can also turn analytics off for this browser using the button below. This stores only your opt-out preference on your device. Blocking analytics does not affect reading, search or listening.
Our legal basis for processing
Under UK GDPR and EU GDPR, the small amount of processing we do rests on the following bases:
- Legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f)): operating the service itself, which includes serving content when you request it, remembering functional preferences, measuring website use to improve the service, and reviewing content submissions so the library stays accurate and respectful. Given how little the service touches and how clearly it serves the people using it, we consider this interest well balanced against your rights.
- Consent (Article 6(1)(a)): anything you voluntarily type into a submission, including the optional email address in the Feedback form. You give this consent by choosing to send the submission, and you may withdraw it at any time (see "Your rights" below).
How long we keep things
- Requests and replies (kirtan requests, corrections, new kirtans and feedback, with their status and any reply) are kept on our server so that you can follow them in My requests, until you ask us to delete them through Feedback in the app. The alert emails, including any optional email address you gave in Feedback, stay in the developer's mailbox until the developer deletes them, and are deleted on request too.
- Shared playlists are kept until you choose Stop sharing, which deletes them from our server.
- IP addresses held for abuse limits (on shared playlists and requests) are kept for at most 24 hours. Standard web server logs kept by our host are separate, and are used only to run and secure the service.
- The registered identifier and its favourites list stay on our server so that favourites survive a reinstall. If you ask us to erase them (through the Feedback option in the app), we will delete the identifier's record and its favourites.
- On-device data (private playlists, cover photos, downloads, settings, the local copy of your favourites, the random identifier) persist on your device until you delete the app or clear its data. Those local copies never reach us, so deleting the app removes them. A backup file you exported stays wherever you saved it until you delete it.
- Website cookies and local storage persist in your browser until they expire or you clear your site data.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR and EU GDPR you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Rectify anything that is inaccurate.
- Erase your data ("the right to be forgotten").
- Restrict or object to our processing of your data.
- Data portability, where applicable, meaning a copy of data you provided in a commonly used format.
- Withdraw consent at any time for anything you submitted voluntarily. Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before you withdrew it.
In practice, because we hold so little, exercising these rights is simple: if you have sent a request or shared a playlist and would like it corrected or deleted, tell us and we will do so. To exercise any of these rights, you can reach us through the Feedback option inside the Pushtimarg Satsang app.
If you live outside the UK and the European Union, we will honour equivalent rights for you on request, in the same spirit.
Complaints
If you believe we have handled your data improperly, we would be grateful for the chance to put it right first: you can reach us through the Feedback option inside the Pushtimarg Satsang app. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. In the UK, that is the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). If you are in the European Union, you may contact the data protection authority in your own country.
Children
The app and website present general-audience devotional content and are not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. We do not ask for age or create profiles of children. Website visits may be included in the limited analytics described above, and analytics can be turned off for the browser. If you believe a child has sent us a request containing personal details, please tell us through the Feedback option inside the Pushtimarg Satsang app and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time, for example if the app gains a new feature that changes how data is handled. When we do, the updated policy will be published on this page with a new effective date shown at the top. Significant changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
How to contact us
For any question about this policy, or to exercise any of your rights, you can reach us through the Feedback option inside the Pushtimarg Satsang app. We read every message ourselves and will respond with care.
